The Syracuse Stamp Club is proud to present our SYRAPEX
2005 cover, “Lights Out!: Remembering the Northeast Blackout of 1965.”
On Tuesday, November 9, 1965 at about 5:15 pm, a massive electrical power
failure plunged vast areas of the Northeast and parts of Canada into darkness.
Countless commuters were stranded in subways, elevators, and electric powered
trains. Airliners were diverted from darkened runways. It was estimated that at
least 20 million people were affected. Regardless of the cause, millions have
personal stories and memories about that night, from simple survival, to finding
romance, to discovering a dark sky full of bright stars.
This unique cachet and cancellations were drawn by club member Vincent Juchimek.
The design depicts a blackened skyline with a starry sky reflecting the
constellations depicted on the postage stamps. The positions of the
constellations in the design can be seen in the diagram to the left.
Cancellation typesetting was done by Donna Davis. Paul Davis, Jim Steele,
Dave Dempsey, and Phil Poplaski also contributed to the design and production of
these covers.
Separate cancellations were available for each day of the show - November 12 and
13.
